Wixom,
MI - Using a Renishaw Cyclone scanning machine together with Delcam software has considerably reduced lead times for the tool repair and replacement service offered by Macworth
Tools. “By keeping this work in-house, we can offer a much speedier service,” said Managing Director, Paul Riley.
Macworth Tools, based in Smethwick, UK, builds and repairs press tools for a wide range of industries including automotive,
electronics and domestic appliances. The repair and replacement work is often based on tools sourced outside the UK so the
original tool drawings may not be obtainable.
In these cases, the Cyclone is used to digitize tool inserts and sections, or sample components. The data is then used with
Delcam’s CAD/CAM software to generate CNC programs for machining new or replacement tool inserts or modules. “We also
use the basic digitized data to build a model, as a foundation on which to alter the tooling surface, when customers request
tooling modifications,” added Mr. Riley.
Most press tools, including progression tools, are built up from a series of machined modules to produce the required
blanking, drawing, forming, piercing, cropping and other operations.
The fit of the individual modules or inserts has to be within a few microns, to ensure continuity of a profiled surface and, in
the case of blanking and piercing, a continuous shearing edge.
